The five idyllic coastal villages that make up the Cinque Terre, or ‘Five Lands’, are nestled amongst the dramatic cliff edge that defines this area of Italy. This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts historical architecture, stunning scenery, and plenty of fresh seafood to enjoy. You’ll be able to indulge in delicious gelato (ice cream), locally grown and produced olive oil, and excellent local wine – plenty to tantalise your taste buds! In keeping with the old-world charm of this area, cars were banned over a decade ago, so the only way to get around is by foot, boat or the 19th century railway line that takes you between villages.

Attractions:

Monterosso

Boasting the only proper stretch of beach in the Cinque Terre, this delightful village known for its lemon trees and anchovies is perfect for relaxing by the coast. Take a walk through charming medieval streets lined with pretty pastel-coloured houses and explore the castle ruins in the old town.

Vernazza

Considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Vernazza has olive groves that are said to produce some of the best olive oil in Italy. With a medieval castle and a piazza filled with bars and restaurants, there’s plenty to keep you occupied.

Manarola

Grapevines adorn this romantic village – trying the sweet Sciacchetrà wine from this region is a must! Steep pathways ascend from the sea, leading to the intriguing white cement pyramid which serves as a vital reference point for sea-farers.

Lucca

With its imposing 16th century ramparts still wrapped around the compact village, this Tuscan town wears its air of uniqueness with fierce pride – it was an independent city-state until the mid-1800s. A jewel of medieval architecture, the town emanates charm and history. Highlights include Puccini’s House, the Cathedral, and the Palazzo Pfanner, which has a wonderful Italian-style garden and a house with 18th century frescoes in monumental halls.

Portofino

This quaint fishing village has an air of exclusivity with plenty of interesting boutique shops to look around. Its beautifully colourful harbour has a peaceful atmosphere that’s perfect for enjoying some free time and unwinding.

Santa Margherita

Picturesque and pleasant, Santa Margherita has beautiful garden terraces in which to sit and watch the world go by. The impressive 17th century Villa Durazzo and the stunning church of San Giacomo are inspiring to look around, offering a glimpse into the history of the area.
